Veress Needle
A Veress needle the standard instrument used to safely create the initial pneumoperitoneum by introducing CO2 gas into the abdominal cavity.
The Veress Needle is used at the start of every laparoscopic procedure to introduce CO2 gas into the abdominal cavity and create the pneumoperitoneum. It features a spring-loaded blunt inner stylet that retracts to expose the sharp outer needle tip during tissue penetration, then springs forward to cover the sharp tip once it enters the gas-filled cavity providing an important safety mechanism against visceral injury. The pneumoperitoneum created by the Veress needle enables subsequent safe trocar insertion.
